I firmly believe in the capacity of youths – Modibbo-Kawu
Former Commissioner for Education in Kwara State, Saadatu Modibbo-Kawu, who is vying for a seat in the House of Representatives to represent the Ilorin East/South federal constituency, says she is a firm believer in the abilities and capacities of youth.
Kawu stated this during an engagement session with some selected youth groups and leaders of All Progressives Congress in her constituency on Friday.
She disclosed that she is going to the green chamber to provide a fair representation for his people.
She said, “Long before now, I have been involved in various forms of charitable work, with our various schools, including the school for special needs, together with my team. We have achieved little, in our capacity, as a team.
“My time as a Commissioner opened my eyes to myriads of issues bedeviling our dear State, and the country at large. There’s probably little I can do in my capacity as a Commissioner; that triggered my aspiration, for the House of Representatives. That would certainly offer me a broader platform, to champion the cause of my people, and promote their aspirations.
“I pointed out the fact that I’m a bridge between the two Local Government Areas of Ilorin East/South. That’s against the divisiveness being championed by some political elements, for reasons best known to them. I have always taken the two Local Governments, with every sense of patriotism and passion, whilst still in active service to the State, and even before.
“I assured them of my continuous and unbiased support to the two Local Governments. By birth, I’m from Ilorin East; and by virtue of marriage, I hail from Ilorin South. These make my candidature quite unique and spectacular.
“Also, I made it known, how important the girl child is to me. As a girl child myself, I have taken cognizance of societal effect on the emancipation of the girl child; and I would leave no stone unturned, to ensure I contribute immensely to the development of the girl child, and the protection of her dignity, as a legislator.”
While responding to questions on how she will strike a balance between the rural communities and urban towns, she said, “I made it known that our rural communities are central to our aspiration. We have accessed their yearnings. We have been part of them. We have a common history together, and I will ensure their dues are urgently met, if and when elected.”
Speaking earlier, the guest lecturer, Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe, urged politicians to be of service to the people and society before coming out for elective positions, stressing that the result might not necessarily translate to electoral victory, but will impact the people.
Listing Self development, developing others, accessibility, listening ears and empathy as criteria needed for public service, he urged politicians to always have interaction with the people.
