House of Reps urge immediate action to combat rising terrorism

In response to a surge in attacks by terrorist groups, the House of Representatives on Tuesday, called on the federal government to strengthen security operations across the country.

This appeal comes amid claims of possible foreign involvement in the recent violence attributed to Boko Haram insurgents in northeastern communities.

During an urgent national motion led by Ahmed Satomi (APC, Borno), the House urged for a comprehensive review of security protocols at military installations to prevent further incidents. They also committed to investigating a recent fire at the Giwa Barracks and requested that the government provide support and compensation to the families of soldiers affected by these attacks.

“The recent surge in Boko Haram attacks on military formations is deeply alarming,” said Satomi. He pointed to the bravery of military personnel as they face relentless assaults, emphasizing, “We must act now before we get back to the era when we lost about 22 local government areas to them.”

Zainab Gimba (APC, Borno) raised concerns about complications arising from the exits of Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali from regional agreements, stating that this could create a significant border crisis. “This is likely to create a border crisis that may be detrimental to the whole nation,” she warned.

Yusuf Adamu Gagdi, Chairman of the House Committee on Navy, expressed frustration over the government’s military investments and the loss of equipment to Boko Haram raids. “We must find a way of bringing insecurity to check,” he declared, insisting on accountability from security agencies for public funds spent on military hardware.

Echoing the urgency of the situation, Ali Isa (PDP, Gombe) urged the president to take serious action: “Let the government do the right thing and ensure that the lives of Nigerians are protected.”

As national security remains a top priority for lawmakers, they are calling for a decisive response to the escalating threats posed by terror groups, demanding accountability and effective measures to safeguard the nation.
