Heartbreak as Sporting gun down Arsenal from Europa league
Arsenal have crashed out of the Europa league after losing 3-5 to Sporting CP on penalties in the second leg of the league round of 16 played on Thursday’s night.
Granit Xhaka’s opener was cancelled by
Pedro Goncalves who scored from inside the centre circle in the 62nd minutes.
The team had earlier played 2-2 in the first leg of the match with the odds favouring the Gunners coming into the second leg.
No thanks to Gabriel Martinelli’s who had his penalty saved- thus clearing the path for the Portuguese side to progress to the quarter-finals on penalties after recording 3-3 on aggregate.
Arsenal will now channel all their energy into the Premier League title race where they currently lead with a five points difference from Manchester City who are standing behind them on the log.
