The Kwara State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has rewarded Kwara United players with five million naira and a plot of land each for their remarkable victory at the 2025 President’s Federation Cup, which also earned the team qualification for the Continental Confederation Cup after nearly five decades.

The announcement was made on Monday during a celebratory event hosted by APC chieftain Amb. Abdulfatai Yahaya Seriki-Gambari at Ilorin’s Banquet Hall.

The governor praised the management and the Kwara State Sports Commission for their dedication, commitment and resilience, which contributed to the excellent performance of not only the senior players but also the U-19 and Under-14 teams of the Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria.

He expressed his excitement that Kwara State will feature in the Continental Confederation Cup after 49 years.

AbdulRazaq also commended Kwarans and supporters who traveled to Lagos to give Kwara United moral support during the final match against Abakaliki FC.

In his remarks, the host of the event, Amb. Abdulfatai Yahaya Seriki-Gambari, attributed the victory to the renovation of the Kwara State Stadium, procurement of sporting facilities, improvement in staff welfare, and other initiatives of Governor AbdulRazaq.

Yahaya Seriki further acknowledged the Governor’s personal sacrifice in attending the final match to boost the players’ morale despite his busy schedule.

He thanked Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his exceptional leadership, which played a vital role in breaking the 49-year-old jinx and bringing this remarkable achievement to Kwara State.

The Kwara Sports Commission and Kwara United management, in separate remarks, appreciated the tremendous support from Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, which contributed to the outstanding performances of Kwara teams in various national competitions.

Earlier, the players thrilled supporters and Kwarans with a trophy parade across major streets in Ilorin, the state capital.

A highlight of the event was a donation of N1 million and N500,000 to Mrs. Oluwatoyin Oluwapanmile Abdullahi (popularly known as Iya Guguru), whose picture went viral during the President Federation Cup Final. The donation was made by Governor AbdulRazaq and Yahaya Seriki respectively.

Recall that Basheer Lukman Olarewaju, Special Assistant to Hon. Murtala Shagaya, had called for fundraising on social media to support Iya Guguru as a way of encouraging her.

The event was attended by members of the state executive cabinet, Kwara State House of Assembly members, football stakeholders and other dignitaries.
