Gobir gives facelift to Kwara oldest public-owned primary school

Barely 3 months after the adoption of the oldest public-owned primary school in Kwara state, The Gobir Organization Foundation has completed the first phase of its renovation.

The first phase included provision of pipeborn water for the school, the host community and furnishing of classrooms to standard.

A borehole has been built, and water reticulated to different corner of the school. New toilets have also been constructed, putting an end to open defecation, which used to be a norm.

Walls have been erected around the school premises with barbed wire installed to provide enough security.

The whole school buildings have also been refurbished.

Before now, students used to sit on the floor to receive lessons. Often, up to three classes were combined together in one class which made it difficult for students to learn.

According to the Foundation, the next phase of renovation would include provision of a befitting playground, gardens and other recreational facilities.

It further said the school library and ICT center will be reconstructed and fully equipped with provision of solar power, which will reduce reliance on the erratic power supply.

Reacting to this, the Education Secretary of Ilorin East Local Government, Alhaji Abdulmalik Soliu applauded the giant stride by Waziri Yakubu Gobir and his Foundation. He described it as “laudable and unprecedented in the community”.

The chairman of Okesuna Community Development Association, Alhaji Usman Okesuna also commended Waziri Gobir for delivering his promise within a short period of time.

The institution, Okesuna primary school in Ilorin was founded in 1915, a year after the amalgamation of Nigeria, and has produced several eminent personalities including the 9th Emir of Ilorin Alhaji Zulukarnaini Gambari.
