‘From N2,000 to N300,000’: VIO to raise traffic offence penalties in Abuja
The Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), commonly known as the Vehicle Inspectorate Office (VIO), in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), is considering a significant increase in fines for traffic offences, with penalties ranging from N5,000 to N300,000, as part of efforts to enhance road safety.
Kalu Emetu, the Director of Public Relations for DRTS, discussed this potential change during an awareness campaign held in selected motor parks within the FCT.
He explained that the intention behind imposing harsher fines is to discourage traffic violations and enhance road safety within the territory.
Emetu stated, “We are hoping that this development will go a long way in forcing motorists to deem it necessary to obey traffic rules and regulations.”
He clarified that the specific fines would be determined based on the nature and severity of the offence.
For instance, in cases where a motorist blocks a road, causing significant traffic congestion, their vehicle could be impounded, and they may face a fine of N300,000.
If the offender does not appear within a week, the authorities may seek a court order for the forfeiture of the vehicle to the government.
Emetu emphasized that these measures are aimed at promoting a culture of compliance with traffic rules and regulations among motorists in the FCT.
He urged drivers to prioritize safety and adhere to road laws, emphasizing that the government is taking a stricter stance on road usage.
