Five inmates recaptured following early jailbreak in Kogi

In a significant response to the recent jailbreak incident at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton Karfe, Kogi State, the Federal Government has confirmed the recapture of five out of twelve inmates who escaped. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, March 24, 2024, when inmates managed to manipulate padlocks, facilitating their escape.

According to DCC Abubakar Umar, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) spokesperson, immediate action was initiated following reports of the incident. The Acting Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, and heads from various security agencies swiftly mobilized to the facility to restore order and launch a manhunt for those at large.

“As of now, we have successfully recaptured five inmates, and our teams are actively pursuing the remaining escapees,” Umar stated. He further revealed that a thorough investigation is underway to ascertain the details surrounding the jailbreak.

In light of the incident, a national security audit across all correctional facilities has been mandated to prevent similar occurrences. The NCoS is urging citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that could assist in the recapture of the remaining fugitives.

The service reassures the public that the safety and security of custodial centres are of utmost importance. Steps are being taken to reinforce security measures and ensure that correctional facilities can fulfill their mandates of safe custody, rehabilitation, and reintegration of inmates effectively.

The NCoS calls on members of the public to cooperate with security agencies and play an active role in maintaining safety within the community.
