FG warns of imminent flooding in 11 states

The Federal Ministry of Environment, via the National Flood Early Warning Centre (FEWS CENTRE), has issued an urgent warning regarding anticipated heavy rainfall that could result in flooding across 11 states from September 14 to 18, 2025.

In a flood prediction notice released on September 14, 2025, and signed by Usman Abdullahi Bokani, the Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, the ministry advised affected communities in flood-prone areas to evacuate promptly.

Bokani listed the states at risk along with specific communities that could be significantly impacted:

  • Adamawa: Ganye, Natubi
  • Benue: Abinsi, Agyo, Gogo, Ito, Makurdi, Udoma, Ukpiam
  • Nasarawa: Agima, Rukubi, Odogbo
  • Taraba: Beli, Serti, Donga
  • Delta: Umugboma, Umukwata, Abraka, Aboh, Okpo-Krika
  • Niger: Rijau
  • Kebbi: Ribah
  • Kano: Gwarzo, Karaye
  • Katsina: Jibia
  • Sokoto: Makira
  • Zamfara: Kaura Namoda, Shinkafi, Maradun, Gusau, Anka, Bungudu

The advisory also cautioned that the rising water levels of the River Gongola, River Benue, and River Niger pose a significant threat, urging communities situated in the flood plain of River Gongola up to Numan and the flood plains of River Benue and River Niger up to Lokoja to evacuate for their safety.
