FG shuts down over 13 million social media accounts for code violations

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has taken decisive action by shutting down 13,597,057 social media accounts across platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter) due to the posting of offensive content and violations of Nigeria’s Code of Practice for online platforms.

This enforcement action comes on the heels of the 2024 Compliance Report submitted by major service providers, including Google, Microsoft, and TikTok.

The report highlighted significant figures, revealing 754,629 registered complaints, the removal of 58,909,112 pieces of content, and 420,439 cases of content re-uploaded after appeal.

Despite the extensive shutdown, NITDA recognized the social media platforms for their cooperation and commitment to adhering to Nigeria’s regulatory framework developed alongside the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).

“NITDA commends the platforms for their efforts to protect users and remove harmful content in line with national laws,” the agency stated.

They emphasized that online platforms operating in Nigeria are required to be locally registered, comply with tax obligations, and follow the established Code of Practice.

Moving forward, NITDA reiterated its commitment to working alongside industry stakeholders, civil society, and regulatory bodies to foster user safety, enhance digital literacy, and ensure transparency within Nigeria’s digital landscape.
