The Kwara State Fire Service Director, Mr. Waheed Yaqub today said the agency forestall what could have led to a great disaster by promptly swinging into action to prevent the spread of a fire outbreak at Fagba market in Ilorin.

Speaking to THE INFORMANT247, he disclosed that if not for the action of the fire service, the market would have been razed down.

Waheed said, “The fire incident occurred at a cloth shop in Fagba. It’s because of our quick intervention, everybody would have know, but if a fire (outbreak) is being averted at an early stage, it will be as if nothing actually happened. If not for our quick intervention, the whole market would have been on fire by now.”

He further admonished cloth sellers and other market persons to be conscious of their environment.

“They should be conscious of their shop wiring. They should try to put wire inside a confit so that it won’t spark because they sell what is prone to fire, cloth are easy to catch fire and we are in dry (harmattan) season now,” he said.

The fire incidence occurred earlier today at Faagba market just behind the Ilorin emir’s palace.

Recall that the state government in 2019 procured fire fighting vehicles for the state fire service to boast it operation.

The state governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq during the presentation of the machine vehicle said “We procured these fire fighting equipment because of the safety of lives and property. It is important we safeguard lives and property. The firefighters have been selfless in what they do to the government and people of the state. So, we need to build their capacity and keep them up to the task.”
