El-Rufai’s silence being weaponised by ICPC — Family cries out
The family of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has accused the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) of using what it described as a smear campaign against him.
In a statement issued by Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, a member of the House of Representatives, the family alleged that the anti-graft agency is “weaponising” the former governor’s constitutional right to remain silent.
Bello El-Rufai described the allegations against his father as “deeply unfortunate,” claiming the Commission had “descended into what can only be described as a circus of chicanery.” He accused the ICPC of abandoning due process in favour of what he termed a media trial.
“Our father has consistently told law enforcement agencies: ‘Charge me if you have anything against me. You have had more than two years to investigate me. Take me to court,’” the lawmaker stated.
He argued that the Commission’s alleged failure to formally arraign the former governor after years of investigation weakens its public claims and raises questions about its approach.
The family further maintained that the ICPC’s inability to prosecute the case in court explains what it described as “lies and obfuscation” surrounding the matter.
As of the time of filing this report, the ICPC had not issued any official response to the allegations made by the El-Rufai family.
