Delta workers banned from keeping beards, dyed hair, eyelashes, others

The Delta State Government has introduced a new directive aimed at promoting a professional appearance among public servants, banning bushy beards, artificial braided or dyed hair, long eyelashes, fake nails, and other forms of what it describes as “indecent appearance.”

The announcement was made via a circular from the Office of the Head of Service, emphasizing that all public servants must now adhere to a neat, professional, and modest dress standard that reflects their positions within the civil service.

According to the circular, male civil servants are prohibited from grooming bushy beards or wearing certain traditional caps, while female employees cannot come to work with artificial hairstyles or excessive makeup.

The revised dress code specifies that senior officers must wear full corporate suits, and junior officers are required to dress in trousers, shirts, and ties. Traditional attire is allowed only on Fridays or during special events, provided it is clean and modest.

The document states: “In an effort to address the unpleasant practice of improper dressing that has become commonplace in the State Public Service, it is instructive to announce a review of the existing dress code…upholding decency in the appearance of Public Servants across the State.”

Furthermore, department heads are tasked with monitoring compliance and sending home any worker who violates the dress code to change their attire before returning to their duties. The consequences for refusing to adhere to the rules could include disciplinary action.

In response to the directive, the circular highlights the expectations for both male and female public servants, detailing acceptable attire and reiterating the importance of maintaining a decorous appearance in the workplace.
