COVID-19: Kwara govt to grant amnesty to prisoners

The Kwara State Government has started working out the modalities to grant amnesty to inmates in Correctional Service Centres in Ilorin.

This is part of the moves for the decongestion of the Correctional Centers in order to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.

The Attorney General of the state, Salman Jawondo, stated that the pardon exercise is limited to two categories of inmates; those on the Awaiting Trial list and the convicts.

He said the government criterias for considering the inmates will include those who are aged, females who have children, inmates who have health challenges, backed with confirmed doctor’s report and people with minor offences.

Jawondo added that those who are facing trial for offences like rape, armed robbery, cultism and homicide will not be pardoned.

The state recorded two confirmed cases of COVID-19.
