Court sentences man to 18-month imprisonment for trafficking cannabis

On Monday, a Federal High Court in Ibadan sentenced Ibrahim Idowu to 18 months in prison for trafficking 4kg of cannabis.

In her decision, Justice Uche Agomoh stated that she convicted and punished Idowu based on the facts presented to her as well as his guilty plea.

Agomoh also mentioned Section 270 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015, which states that anyone who pleads guilty to an offence shall receive a reduced sentence

“I also considered the fact that Idowu has demonstrated regret and a want to make a fresh start.”

Furthermore, Idowu has not squandered this court’s time or resources by pleading guilty.

Idowu, on the other hand, is sentenced to one and a half years in jail as a warning to others.

“Sentencing begins on the date he was apprehended for the first offence.”

“The Nation Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) shall destroy the cannabis substance found in his possession,” the judge said.

Mr Musibau Olapade, the convict’s counsel, pleaded with the court to show pity by decreasing his client’s sentence.

The inmate, according to Olapade, was a first-time offender.

Earlier, NDLEA Counsel Mrs. R.O. Ige informed the court that the prisoner was charged on a single count of unlawful possession of Indian hemp.

Idowu committed the act on the Ogbomosho-Ilorin express expressway on September 5, according to Ige.

She began by stating that the offence violated Section 11(C) of the NDLEA Act Cap No. 30 legislation of the Federation of 2004.
