Coup: ECOWAS declares state of emergency in all West African states
In response to recent attempted coup in Benin Republic and other successful military take over in West African countries, the Economic Community of West African States on Tuesday, declared a state of emergency in the region.
The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, announced the declaration in Abuja at the ministerial level during the 55th session of the mediation and security council.
The meeting was convened following the string of coups and botched mutinies in the sub-region.
Touray said the developments highlight the “imperative of serious introspection on the future of our democracy and the urgent need to invest in the security of our community”.
