CAF hints at possible postponement of 2023 Nations Cup
Report have emerged on how weather condition may force a change of schedule on the next African Cup of Nations holding in Cote D’Ivoire.
A Le Monde report claims the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is considering postponing the 17th edition of the AFCON scheduled for June 23 to July 23, 2023, in Ivory Coast.
The development is coming on the heels of how major cities in Ivory Coast are currently experiencing heavy rains wit floods- a year before the kick off.
Rain is one of the major constraints to scheduling a competition of that magnitude and the organisers are looking for what to do in respect to climate condition.
“We are considering it; it is one of the possibilities,” admits CAF Secretary General Veron Mosengo-Omba, interviewed by Le Monde.
“We asked Ivorian meteorologists to report to us on rainfall history in Côte d’Ivoire in June and July, but also to share their projections with us.” she said
Recall that COVID-19 pandemic forced the rescheduling of the last edition which held in Cameroon to January-February 2022 against the earlier schedule of June-July 2021.
The issue is however expected to be on the menu of the 44th Ordinary General Assembly of CAF scheduled for August 10 in Arusha, Tanzania.
