BREAKING: Lagos Assembly suspends plenary amid tensions, security breach

…protests erupt over alleged plot to remove Speaker Meranda

Tension has escalated at the Lagos State House of Assembly following a dramatic security breach by operatives of the State Security Services (SSS) on Monday, leading to the indefinite suspension of plenary sessions.

According to reports, security personnel stormed the Assembly complex in the early hours of Monday, locking the Deputy Speaker’s office before the start of the plenary.

In response to the move, legislative workers began protesting, voicing their concerns over alleged plans to unseat Speaker Mojisola Meranda.

Protests intensified as workers clashed with DSS operatives, who had also sealed off Meranda’s office, along with those of her Deputy and the Clerk.

The protests came amid growing political tensions within the Assembly, particularly following the recent legal battle involving the former Speaker, Obasa, who was removed over alleged abuse of office and corruption.

When Meranda arrived at the Assembly complex around 11:15 a.m. amidst tight security, numerous legislative workers and assembly members rallied in solidarity with her, chanting, “Meranda, We Want!”

This move further fueled the standoff between lawmakers and security officers.

The lawmakers were eventually able to regain access to the Assembly.

During the plenary session, which proceeded despite the heightened security situation, the lawmakers addressed the breach and passed a vote of confidence in Speaker Meranda.

They also resolved to investigate the incident and report their findings to President Bola Tinubu and the SSS Director General, Oluwatosin Ajayi.
