Borno police constable returns N2.6m mistakenly transferred into his account

In a remarkable act of integrity, a police constable serving with the Borno State Police Command, Mohammed Alhaji Muhammad, has returned N2.6 million that was mistakenly transferred into his bank account.

Muhammad said his decision to return the money was driven by a personal commitment to uphold honesty and challenge negative perceptions often associated with the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

The development was confirmed on Monday by the State Police Public Relations Officer, Nahum Daso.

The story first gained public attention after a Facebook user, Bello Jafar, publicly commended the officer for what he described as a rare show of integrity.

“I would like to formally express my appreciation for Mohammad Alhaji Muhammad, a loyal customer of United Bank for Africa (UBA) and a police officer of exceptional integrity,” Jafar wrote, noting that the officer promptly took steps to ensure the funds were returned to the rightful owner.

According to police spokesperson Daso, the money was mistakenly transferred from a Moniepoint customer into the constable’s account last Thursday. Muhammad, who works in the insurance office of the Borno State Police Command, immediately recognized that he was not expecting any payment.

“Upon receiving the credit alert, he knew the money was not meant for him,” Daso explained. “By Friday morning, he sought permission and went straight to his bank to report the transaction, requesting that the issue be properly addressed and the funds returned.”

Following the incident, the Borno State Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajeed, invited the constable for a meeting to commend his exemplary conduct.

The officer’s action has since drawn praise from members of the public, with many describing it as a refreshing reminder that integrity still thrives within the force.
