The closure of Nigeria’s land borders has opened a vista of opportunities for poultry farmers in Kwara state and Ilorin in particular
In all , the closure had given local poultry farmers access to markets. And this development is a challenge to the farmers to improve in their production.
This current high demand for poultry products for domestic and commercial needs necessitated the exhibition to spur the farmers to be alive to their responsibilities and leverage on the government policy on border closure. I think this is the opportunity the farmers had been looking for, as it restricted importation of poultry products especially frozen chicken which is in high use ever since.
Although, meeting up this challenges is a very big issues as it comes with the shortage of funds evdm when the market is open and ready for now.
In the past , many poultry farmers find it difficult in production broilers for meat consumption especially those on a small scale production.
The emergence of various new eateries and supermarkets in Ilorin metropolis also contributed to the skyrocket boast. Many of those eateries now have no option than to patronise the local poultry farm for their products in Ilorin metropolis.
Nigeria consumes two million tons of poultry yearly, 70% of which is imported from abroad. However, the opportunities in this is eminent and a thing all business and investors should practically que into.
As a result of this, local farmers can be said to be in their prime as demands of their produce is on the high side. Today , the shortage is glaring in Nigeria and Ilorin specifically.
There is no doubt that the borders closure is laudable, the action was the best decision for the poultry industry in Nigeria.
The closure of the borders to imported frozen chicken, is an answer to the prayer of Nigerian poultry farmers and processors.
Importing food items has never been to the benefit of the Nigerian agriculture sector. While importing, we are losing foreign exchange, jobs and enforcing poverty.
The closure of Nigerian borders to the importation of food items is a good development for the country. It will in the long run engender food security.
This is indeed the best time to invest in the sector as the market availability especially in this festival period will be huge.
