Boko Haram explosives claim nine lives of passengers in Borno
At least nine passengers have tragically lost their lives due to Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) planted by Boko Haram terrorists at a local bus stop in Mairari village, located within Guzamala Local Government Area (LGA) of Borno State.
Mairari village, situated approximately 18 km from Monguno LGA and 119 km from Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, was the scene of this heart-wrenching incident, which has also left several others injured.
Rt. Hon. Abdulkarim Lawan, Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, confirmed the incident, labeling the attack as inhumane. He made an appeal to the military, urging them to escalate their operations to reclaim the Guzamala LGA from Boko Haram.
“It is unfortunate that nine of my resilient constituents were killed by planted IEDs today while waiting to board vehicles at a local bus stop in Mairari village. May Allah grant their souls Aljanatul Firdaus,” he expressed.
Lawan extended his prayers for the swift recovery of those who were evacuated to hospitals in Monguno and Maiduguri for treatment after the incident.
He highlighted the urgent need for civil authority in areas such as Gudumbali, the Council Headquarters, and Mairari village, which have all suffered from Boko Haram/ISWAP attacks.
He noted, “Mairari village, which was hitherto the only village that was resettled two times with civil authority in the whole of Guzamala local government area, has remained deserted again due to Boko Haram/ISWAP attacks.”
Lawan added that many displaced residents, currently taking refuge in Monguno, Guzamala, and Maiduguri, sometimes return to Mairari to tend to their farms. However, he lamented that terrorists monitoring their movements planted IEDs at their bus stop.
He expressed confidence in the newly deployed Theatre Commander of North East ‘Operation Hadin Kai’, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, and his troops, but reiterated his call for the military to take control of Guzamala LGA to restore civil authority.
