Alleged public incitement: Niger govt orders demolition of Badeggi Radio station as controversy heighten up

The contentious battle between the Niger State government and Badeggi Radio Station has taken a dramatic turn, with state officials now ordering the demolition of the station’s premises.

This action follows claims that the radio station has been inciting violence within the community.

Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, during a recent APC Caucus meeting, justified the closure of the station by stating, “We cannot allow any medium to incite the people against the government.”

He further accused the station’s owner, Alhaji Shuaibu Badeggi, of disturbing public order and mandated the revocation of its broadcast license.

However, the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation has intervened, suggesting that the state should address its concerns through proper channels.

“The suspension of broadcasting licenses falls within the jurisdiction of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC),” stated Minister Alhaji Idris, urging the state to report the issues for a more formal examination.

Support for this call has also come from the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) in Niger State.

In a statement, the NBA asserted, “The appropriate and lawful course of action would be to petition the NBC or seek redress in court.”

They emphasized that direct administrative orders could undermine constitutional rights, including freedom of expression.

The NBA’s chairman, Isyaku Barau, reinforced the need for the government to respect democratic norms, stating, “Channeling concerns through the appropriate frameworks will demonstrate fidelity to constitutional order and enhance public trust in the administration.”

As the situation unfolds, stakeholders are calling for dialogue and adherence to legal procedures to ensure fairness and uphold democratic values in media regulation.
