Akogun hails Kwara South solidarity for North’s 2027 governorship bid
A leading House of Assembly aspirant for Share/Oke-Ode State Constituency, Abdulrasheed Akogun, has hailed what he described as a historic show of unity across Kwara South Senatorial District in support of zoning the state’s 2027 governorship to Kwara North.
Akogun gave the commendation in a statement issued to journalists while reacting to the large turnout of residents from across the southern district who gathered in Ajase-Ipo, headquarters of Irepodun Local Government Area, to endorse the All Progressives Congress zoning arrangement.
He said the development reflected a shared commitment to fairness and inclusivity in the state’s political process.
“We the people of Kwara South have once again demonstrated our unwavering commitment to justice, fairness and equity in the political landscape of Kwara State,” Akogun said.
He noted that the backing from local government areas including Ifelodun, Offa, Oyun, Irepodun, Ekiti, Isin and Oke-Ero underscored what he called the district’s democratic values and unifying spirit.
According to him, Kwara South has historically played a central role in promoting equitable distribution of political offices, advocating rotation of both elective and appointive positions to ensure balance and inclusion.
Akogun also pointed to what he described as a longstanding imbalance in the state’s governorship history. He said Kwara North had only held the position for a brief period since the creation of the state in 1967, while Kwara South governed for eight years after the return to democracy in 1999. By 2027, he added, Kwara Central would have held power for about two decades.
“In the spirit of fairness and to strengthen the fabric of our democracy, it is only natural and just that Kwara North is given the opportunity to produce the next governor of Kwara State,” he said.
Akogun expressed support for Rt. Hon. Salihu Yakubu Danladi as a suitable candidate to succeed Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, citing his experience and close working relationship with the current administration.
“There is no better individual to continue the exemplary work of the governor than Rt. Hon. Danladi,” he said, adding that Danladi was well positioned to consolidate on existing achievements and drive further development.
He called on stakeholders and political actors across the state to rally behind the zoning arrangement, urging collective action toward what he described as a more inclusive future.
Akogun also emphasized that zoning should not come at the expense of merit, stressing that competence, integrity and experience must remain key considerations in the selection of candidates.
He said balancing equity with capability would ensure sustainable progress and better governance for the people of Kwara State.
