Afenifere: Tinubu’s renewed hope a nightmare for Nigerians

The pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, has expressed deep concern over the state of the nation under President Bola Tinubu, declaring that what was once framed as a “renewed hope” has tragically become a “nightmare” for Nigerians.

In a recent statement issued by its leaders, Oba Oladipo Olaitan and Justice Faloye, Afenifere highlighted that a midterm report on the Tinubu administration indicates a troubling regression in every key human development and sociopolitical index since he took office.

The organization further accused the administration of engaging in “massive propaganda claiming false successes,” while neglecting the real suffering experienced by the populace. “The Midterm Report shows that every human development and sociopolitical index has regressed since the coming to office of President Bola Tinubu, turning the promise of renewed hope to a nightmare of regressing hopelessness and despair,” they stated.

Afenifere described the administration’s economic policies as having inflicted “unmitigated sufferings” on Nigerians, criticizing the government for its failure to prepare for the repercussions of its decisions on subsidies and currency floating. This has led to what they term “Tinubu Economic Deforms.”

Moreover, Afenifere denounced the growing rise in costs associated with governance and pointed to a significant disparity in wage increases among civil servants, suggesting that a small fraction of the population benefitted while the majority suffered from soaring inflation and reduced wages.

The organization also raised alarms about the centralizing tendencies of the Tinubu administration, warning that it threatens democratic structures and the autonomy of local governments. “In the quest for absolute power, the Tinubu administration is trading off lives of Nigerians by refusing to devolve power for state police,” they remarked.

The atmosphere of dissent has reportedly intensified under this administration, with increased intolerance for protests and a worrying trend of opposition politicians defecting to the ruling party to escape persecution. Afenifere underscored the urgency of their report as a means to amplify the voices of the millions affected by the administration’s policies.

In their closing remarks, they urged President Tinubu to shift focus towards empathetic leadership that prioritizes the welfare of all Nigerians over political ambitions, warning that “No amount of propaganda will erase hunger and poverty in the land.”
