27-year-old man arraigned for allegedly defrauding POS operator in Oyo
Ayobami Olaoluwa, 27, was charged at an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan for allegedly robbing POS operators of N255,000.
Olaoluwa, of No. 12, Itamerin tioya, Ibadan, is on trial on three counts of fraud, conspiracy, and theft.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Opeyemi Olagunju, informed the court that Olaoluwa and one other person at large reportedly planned to scam unsuspecting POS Operators in Ibadan.
According to Olagunju, the accused contacted a POS operator, Amina Oladele, in Muslim, Ibadan, on July 20, 2021, for a withdrawal of N51,000.
He said Olaoluwa reportedly adjusted the amount to N5,100 when he was requested to enter his pin number with the goal to deceive her.
When asked to enter his pin number after typing N51,000, withdrawal, the defendant allegedly deleted one zero, making it N5,100, while he will be paid N51,000 totaling N153, 000.
“On February 2, at Adesola Street, Olorunsogo, Ibadan, the defendant reportedly handed his ATM card to another POS operator, Fasasi Zainab, to enter N51,000 for withdrawal.”
“The defendant was accused of unlawfully changing the amount to N5,100 when he was asked to enter his pin number and collecting the sum of N51,000.
“On January 21, at Aleshinloye market, the defendant allegedly presented an ATM card with No 539983—-6663 at the POS machine and instructed the operator, Mrs Faith (no surname included), to type N51,000 and also defrauded her of N51,000,” Olagunju said.
He claimed the offence violated Sections 390 (9), 419A (b), and 516 of the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State 2000.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Mr Olaide Hamzat, the Chief Magistrate, granted the defendant bail in the amount of N100,000 with two sureties in the same amount.
Hamzat stated that one of the sureties must be a landowner and adjourned the case until March 17, for a hearing.
