2027: NNPP denies Kwankwaso of party’s presidential ticket
The national leadership of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has announced that Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso will not be eligible to contest the 2027 presidential election on the party’s platform.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Lagos, the NNPP National Secretary, Ogini Olaposi, said the party’s 2027 presidential ticket would be open only to bona fide members who meet all constitutional and qualification requirements. He clarified that Kwankwaso, who was the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, would not have access to the NNPP ticket in the next general polls.
Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State, is yet to respond to the announcement.
Olaposi stressed that unlike the 2023 election—when the presidential ticket was solely reserved for Kwankwaso—the party has now opened the contest to all qualified and eligible members. He added that the NNPP is committed to a transparent, constitutional, and democratic process in selecting its 2027 flagbearer.
The party also disclosed its readiness to enter alliances with like-minded political parties ahead of the 2027 elections, noting that the decision was aimed at strengthening internal democracy and party unity.
Meanwhile, the NNPP is reportedly grappling with factional leadership crises and multiple court cases, raising concerns over the legitimacy of its party structure and future nominations. A court judgment is said to recognise a faction of the party different from the one associated with Kwankwaso, further deepening the internal rift.
