2 of 25 abducted Kebbi schoolgirls ‘escape’ from bandits

Two out of the 25 abducted female students of the Government Girls Secondary School, Maga, Kebbi state, have reportedly escaped from their captors.

According to Hussaini Aliyu, an official from Danko Wasagu LGA, the BBC reported that the two students ran away as they were being led into the bushes by the bandits and escaped across farmland.

Aliyu said the girls were “back and are safe”, noting that one of them needed medical treatment as she had wounded her leg while fleeing.

The Informant247 had earlier reported how bandits attacked the school on Sunday night wisked away 25 female students during the raid.

Nafi’u Kotarkoshi, police spokesperson in Kebbi, said Hassan Makuku, the school’s vice principal, lost his life during the attack, while Ali Shehu, a security guard, sustained gunshot injuries to his right hand.

The BBC report added that Shehu later died in hospital from the wounds.

Mohammed Idris, minister of information and national information, said President Bola Tinubu has ordered the swift rescue of the female students.

Idris said Tinubu has condemned the attack and reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to protecting all Nigerians, especially schoolchildren.

Bello Muhammad Sani, the commissioner of police in Kebbi, said additional police tactical units, alongside military personnel and vigilance groups, have been deployed in the area.

Sami said the combined team is currently combing suspected escape routes and surrounding forests in a coordinated search and rescue operation aimed at recovering the abducted students and arresting the perpetrators.
