17 dead in Ogun multiple road accident
Shehu Mohammed, the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has expressed sadness after the tragic death of 17 persons, including an FRSC rescue operative, in a multiple-vehicle collision that took place in the Gbara area of Ogun State on Saturday.
In a statement released on Sunday, signed by Assistant Corps Marshal and Corps Public Education Officer Olusegun Ogungbemide, Mohammed extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims while urging motorists to prioritize vehicle maintenance and strictly adhere to speed limits to prevent future tragedies on the roads.
The incident, which occurred around 4:00 p.m., involved seven vehicles, including a white DAF truck with registration number T14007LA, a Toyota Hiace bus (AGL752YC), a Honda saloon car (HET680), a Nissan pickup van belonging to the Nigeria Police Force (STF10204), two Bajaj motorcycles (AGG448Q and PKA214WS), and another unregistered DAF truck.
The crash, caused by excessive speeding and brake failure, involved 18 individuals—12 male adults, five female adults, and one female child. Tragically, 17 people—11 men, five women, and the child—lost their lives, while only one individual was rescued with injuries.
Expressing concern over the escalating number of speed-related accidents nationwide, the Corps Marshal emphasized that FRSC would no longer tolerate reckless driving. He assured that the driver responsible for this fatal crash would be prosecuted.
Mohammed also paid tribute to the fallen FRSC operative who died while serving the public and reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to enhancing road safety and enforcing traffic regulations. He urged all road users, including motorists and pedestrians, to assist in the FRSC’s efforts to curb speed violations and make Nigerian roads safer.
